On top of a granite pedestal sits a life-size bust of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. On the left side of the pedestal list those that lost their lives in the fight for civil rights. The right side of the pedestal recognizes his founding of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. When he served as president of the conference, they held an organizational meeting in New Orleans on February 14, 1957.
